Album
Hubert Parry was een componist die als geen ander een Britse collectieve snaar wist te raken. Zijn immens populaire hymne Jerusalem (1916) speelde o.a. een rol in de strijd voor vrouwenkiesrecht. Er gingen destijds zelfs stemmen op om Jerusalem tot het officiële Britse volkslied te maken. Ook Parry’s anthem I was glad is vaste prik tijdens de Britse kroningsceremoniën sinds de kroning van Edward VII in 1902. De rest van Parry’s oeuvre – hij schreef o.a. vier symfonieën – bleef in de schaduw van de genoemde tophits. Echt verbazingwekkend is dat niet, want ook de muziek van deze cd is aan de brave kant. De Vierde Symfonie klinkt hier voor het eerst op cd in de oorspronkelijke (ongepubliceerde) versie uit 1889. Ook bij de overige werken (Proserpine & delen uit Suite Moderne) gaat het om cd-premières.
