Erik Satie Jack in the box

Waar vele omponisten uit de twintigste eeuw, behoedzaam, om niet te zeggen moeizaam, van het ene naar het andere werk overgingen, aldus een bescheiden oeuvre nalatend, was Darius Milhaud (1892-1974) iemand die met groot gemak en in hoog tempo componeerde. Het hoeft dan ook geen verbazing te wekken dat zijn "Symfonie nr.10" opusnummer 328 heeft. Dit werk werd geschreven in 1960, in opdracht van de Amerikaanse staat Oregon - deze naam verschijnt, overgezet in noten, als thema in de finale. Qua opzet bijna identiek met dit werk is "Musique pour l'Indiana, op.418" uit 1966, dat van Milhaud niet de titel 'symfonie' kreeg 'omdat ik er al twaalf had geschreven en wel eens een andere naam wilde'. Ook dit stuk is geschreven voor een jubileum van een Amerikaanse staat (Indiana). Evenals de "Symfonie nr.10" heeft het vier delen, een speelduur van ca 20 minuten en is het gegoten in Milhaud's altijd weer enigszins weerbarstige, met bi-tonale klanken gekruide idioom. Iets toegankelijker is het ballet "L'homme et son désir, op.46" uit 1948 voor vier solisten en orkest. In dit werk klinkt Milhaud's liefde voor Brazilië, waar hij vele jaren verbleef, door, hetgeen vooral in de prominente rol voor het slagwerk tot uiting komt. De solisten en het BBC Symphony Orchestra worden hier gedirigeerd door Milhaud zelf, die ten tijde van de opname 77 jaar oud was. Ondanks zijn hoge leeftijd houdt hij het geheel goed in de hand, vooral in bovengenoemd ballet. De opnames zijn live, maar het publiek is gelukkig muisstil. (JvG)_
