Gordon Gano was zanger/gitarist van Amerikaanse underground formatie Violent Femmes. Deze band was vooral in de jaren tachtig populair door hun combinatie van alternatieve rock, post-punk en new wave. Hun beste albums waren waarschijnlijk Violent Femmes (1983) en The Blind Leading The Naked (1986). Op zijn solo-debuut Hitting The Ground (2002) wordt Gordon Gano vocaal bijgestaan door bevriende artiesten als PJ Harvey, Mary Lou Lord, Lou Reed, John Cale, Frank Black en They Might Be Giants.
