John Dowland The John Dowland collection

Album

John Dowland werd in 1563 geboren, een jaar voor Shakespeare, Marlowe en Galileo, en vijf jaar nadat Elizabeth I de troon had bestegen. Het is na te lezen in het beknopte, maar handige overzicht in het booklet, waarin Dowlands biografische gegevens gemixt zijn met weetjes uit de toenmalige politiek en cultuur. Zo lezen we dat het Dowland in 1594 niet lukte om John Johnson, Queen’s Musician for the Lutes, op te volgen. Waarna de onfortuinlijke Dowland – altijd dolend, altijd dolerend – aan zijn omzwervingen op het continent begon. Deze fraaie compilatie lijkt de fans van Sting naar de klassieke muziek te willen lokken. Ze leunt o.a. op de oude, maar nog lang niet verouderde The Collected Works van The Consort of Musicke o.l.v. Anthony Rooley (L’Oiseau-Lyre, 1976-1980), aangevuld met recentere releases van o.a. Barbara Bonney, Anne Sofie von Otter, Andreas Scholl en Edin Karamazov (de luitist van Sting). De rode draad wordt gevormd door de zeven Lachrimae uit 1604, te beginnen met Lachrimae Antiquae, de instrumentale versie van Flow, my tears. (HJ)
