Met het fiasco van zijn opera "La damnation de Faust" in 1846 braken zware tijden aan in het leven van de componist Hector Berlioz (1803-69). Verschillende keren zat hij bijna financieel aan de grond, wat slechts verhinderd kon worden door succesvolle concertreizen in het buitenland. Tevens liep zijn huwelijk met de Engelse actrice Harriet Smith (de inspiratiebron voor zijn meesterwerk de "Symphonie fantastique") stuk. Harriet stierf in 1854.
