De grote werken van Berlioz zijn vaak hybride van karakter. Zo zou men zijn Harold en Italie nog het beste kunnen typeren als een programmatische symfonie in de vorm van een concert voor altviool. De prominente rol van de altviool was gedacht voor Paganini, die een stuk wilde hebben voor zijn pas verworven Stradivarius altviool. Gaandeweg dacht Berlioz echter aan het symfonisch verbeelden van zijn omzwervingen in Italië, in navolging van de hoofdpersoon uit Lord Byrons Childe Harold's Pilgrimage....
