Cinephilia
movies, love and memory
New periods, practices and definitions of what it means to love the cinema. Beyond the individualist immersion in film, typical of the cinephilia as was popular from the 1950s to the 1970s, a new type of cinephilia has emerged since the 1980s. The film fans of today embrace and use new technology, are collectors and traders, consumers and producers.

Mattias Frey The permanent crisis of film criticism
the anxiety of authority
Film criticism is in crisis. Dwelling on the many film journalists made redundant at newspapers, magazines, and other 'old media' in past years, commentators have voiced existential questions about the purpose and worth of the profession in the age of WordPress blogospheres and proclaimed the 'death of the critic'. Bemoaning the current anarchy of internet amateurs and the lack of authoritative critics, many journalists and academics claim that in the digital age, cultural commentary has become dumbed...

Ivo Blom Jean Desmet and the early Dutch film trade
History of the career of Dutch cinema owner and film distributor Jean Desmet (1875-1956), offers insight into the development of early film distribution and cinema culture in the Netherlands. Between 1907 and 1916, the world of cinema experienced radical structural change, which Desmet not only witnessed but also helped to bring about. Given the insufficiencies of Dutch film production, Desmet became a link between film production abroiad and film exhibition in the Netherlands.
