Arthur Benjamin (1893-1960) was al op jonge leeftijd een veelbelovend musicus. Hij ging studeren in Londen bij Stanford en besloot in 1914 in militaire dienst te gaan. Na de oorlog ging hij piano doceren aan het conservatorium in Sydney en verschenen zijn eerste composities. Hoewel ook aan hem de invloed van de jazz niet voorbij ging, bleek hij zich toch het meest aangetrokken te voelen tot muziek afkomstig uit Latijns-Amerika en het Caraïbisch gebied. Dit leverde hem met name in de lichte muziek...
