De Franse schrijver Stendhal vroeg zich ooit af of de technisch perfecte stem wel in staat was om intense emoties uit te drukken. Aan het begin van de negentiende eeuw was de ideale sopraanstem (net als in de achttiende eeuw) nog over het gehele bereik zilverachtig van klank.
