Toen Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1929 zijn opera Sir John In Love voltooide, was hij er zich terdege van bewust niet de eerste te zijn die zich liet inspireren door Shakespeare's tragikomische personage Sir John Falstaff. Verdi was wellicht de bekendste voorloper. Vaughan Williams' opera is echter zo anders dan Verdi's Falstaff (1893), dat de twee nauwelijks met elkaar kunnen concurreren. Falstaff biedt beter drama, maar Vaughan Williams Engelstalige opera ademt de sfeer van het Elizabethaanse theater....
