George Faraday Revolt of the filmmakers
the struggle for artistic autonomy and the fall of the Soviet film industry
Account of the whole sweep of Soviet cinema from its early days as the 'Most important art' to that of the 'Most fragmented business' of the post-Soviet, post-perestroika era. The collapse of the country's film industry is seen as one of the many unforseen consequences of the fall of the Soviet Union. While it produced around 150 features annually and had an audience of four billion a year, in 1991 attendance plummeted. Those who still went to the film preferred the imported products of Hollywood.
