A technical system such as an offshore installation, a building, a road, or a transportation fleet, consists of many different components. Carrying out maintenance on one of the components usually requires preparatory work, for example the transportation of a maintenance crew by air, or the shutdown of a system. This work can be shared when several components are maintained simultaneously, and hence large savings may be achieved when the maintenance of different components is grouped. Many multi-component models in the literature can only deal with a small number of components, unless they assume a very specific deterioration structure. This book therefore considers general approaches for the grouping of maintenance, allowing for many components and a large variety of maintenance policies. The first part considers long-term and stationary maintenance planning, and an approach for coordinating the maintenance frequencies of the multiple components in the system is presented. In the second part short-term or dynamic planning is condidered and a general approach is proposed for adapting a long-term plan to information available on the short term, such as a varying use of components or the occurrence of maintenance opportunities
