As the old studio system gave way to a new generation of American auteurs, directors such as Peter Bogdanovich, Bob Rafelson, Martin Scorsese and Robert Altman helped create an independent cinema. The protests against the Vietnam War, the Civiel Rights movement and feminism saw the emergence of an entirely different political culture.
