Album

Met de cd A Venetian Coronation werd het ensemble Gabrieli Consort & Players, onder leiding van Paul McCreesh, in één klap beroemd. Zowel in vakbladen als in commerciëlere tijdschriften werd de cd de hemel in geprezen, niet alleen vanwege de prachtige uitvoering, maar ook vanwege de aanpak. De cd probeerde namelijk een soort reconstructie te bieden van hoe een feestelijke kronings-mis rond 1600 klonk. De cd begint met stemmig klokgelui, en in de ruim zeventig minuten die volgen, horen we orgelmuziek, gregoriaans, feestelijke harmonie-korpsen en vooral fantastische muziek van Andrea en Giovanni Gabrieli. Zo krijgt de luisteraar een bijna filmische ervaring voorgeschoteld, en het is nog steeds meteen duidelijk waarom deze cd zoveel bewondering oogstte. (TC)
