Door alle slappe imitaties die volgden is het achteraf moeilijk de enorme impact van het transculturele album Graceland te herroepen. Het nummer Homeless is het perfecte voorbeeld van de baanbrekende mix van rock en Afrikaanse ritmes, en roept op melancholische wijze de Afrikaanse schoonheid en eenzaamheid op. De opwekkende harmonieën van Ladysmith Black Mambazo geven glans aan Homeless en Diamonds On The Soles Of Her Shoes. De humor van dat laatste nummer is ook terug te vinden in de hitsingle You Can Call Me All. De teksten zitten mooi in elkaar en het resultaat is een bouwwerk van onberispelijke proporties. Of zoals Simon zelf zingt in het laatstgenoemde nummer: ‘there are angels in the architecture’.
