John Blow Venus and Adonis

Bij l'Oiseau-Lyre verscheen o.l.v. Philip Pickett met de New London Consort een schitterende uitvoering van Venus & Adonis van de 17e eeuwse Engelse componist John Blow, met o.a. Catherine Bott als Venus. Deze "Masque for the entertainment of the king" beleefde zijn premiÞre aan het hof vermoedelijk rond 1681, met in de bezetting ondermeer een minnares van de koning en het dochtertje van de koning. Hoe aardig deze details ook zijn, ze brengen helaas met zich mee dat het libretto van deze toch voor een bepaald publiek bestemde opera niet overal dezelfde dramatische impact heeft als bijvoorbeeld Dido & Aeneas van Purcell. Muzikaal gezien echter valt er veel te genieten, zoals ondermeer in het lieflijke "Tune for flutes" aan het begin van de eerste akte. Een hoogtepunt, niet alleen voor deze opera, maar ook voor de Engelse barokmuziek in het algemeen, vormt de slotscene, waarin Venus, tezamen met het koor, de gestorven Adonis beweent. Ook voor onze verwende 20ste eeuwse oren klinken de gedurfde harmonieÙn van deze rouwklacht nog buitengewoon orgineel. (H.J.)
