John Dowland Flow my teares

Album

In tegenstelling tot andere componisten is er over het leven en werken van John Dowland (1563-1626) aardig wat bekend. Hij voorzag zijn liedboeken altijd van een uitgebreide introductie waarin hij zijn werk als musicus omschreef en iets vertelde van zijn muzikale opleiding. Dowland was luitist en schreef als één van de eerste Engelse componisten sololiederen (zangstem en luit) in de eigen taal. Dankzij vorm, stijl en inhoud van deze liederen waren ze populair. "The first booke of songs" dateert uit 1597. Van dit boek zijn zeker 5000 kopieën verschenen. In 1600 verscheen "The second booke of songs". Dowland werkte in die tijd aan het Deense hof. Dit tweede boek bevat ook liederen voor twee stemmen (cantus & bassus) en luit. "Flow my teares fall from your springs" is afkomstig uit deze bundel. Een selectie uit beide boeken is op cd uitgebracht door tenor Paul Agnew en luitist Christopher Wilson. (L.W.)_
