Als Black Francis maakte hij naam met de uit Boston afkomstige Pixies, een groep die zich al snel nestelde in het underground-circuit. In 1993 besloot hij solo te gaan, The Cult Of Ray is zijn derde album. De muziek op dit album is melodieuzer dan voorheen, maar nog steeds eigenzinnig en rauw. Lekker stevige songs met vlammend gitaarwerk van Black samen met gitarist Lyle Workman.
