Het politieke en religieuze klimaat waarin de Engelse componist Thomas Tallis (1505-1586) was onrustig. Kerk en staat waren niet gescheiden. Door de troonswisselingen veranderde de staatsgodsdienst: katholicisme en protestantisme wisselden elkaar af. Dit stelde ook steeds weer andere eisen aan de kerkmuziek. Tallis bleef trouw aan het katholicisme. Zijn meeste bekende werken zijn "The lamentations". Deze klaagliederen zijn toonzettingen van teksten van de profeet Jeremia die zijn volk smeekt terug te keren tot God. De gevarieerde compositietechniek van Tallis onderstreept de bedoeling van de tekst. "Spem in alium" is zijn bekendste motet, het is maar liefst veertigstemmig geschreven. Tallis was naast componist ook organist. Zijn instrumentale muziek is niet zo bekend geworden, maar een aantal fraaie werken voor toestinstrument en consort is overgeleverd. Theatre of voices o.l.v. Paul Hillier en The King's Noyse o.l.v. David Douglass namen een mooie cd op met bovengenoemde werken en andere motetten van Tallis. Het cd-boekje geeft een uitgebreide toelichting op het repertoire en schetst een tijdsbeeld. (L.W.)_
