Joe Lovano Quartets - Live at the Village Vanguard

Album

Joe Lovano behoort tegenwoordig bij de grote en belangrijke saxofonisten van deze tijd. Hij beweegt zich tussen traditie en vrijheid. Op deze dubbelaar is hij te bewonderen met twee verschillende kwartetten tijdens optredens in die befaamde jazzclub The Village Vanguard. Op 12 maart 1994 speelde hij daar met trompettist/fl³gelhorn-speler Tom Harrell, bassist Anthony Cox en drummer Billy Hart. Op 20 en 22 januari 1995 speelde hij er met pianist Mulgrew Miller, bassist Christian McBride en drummer Lewis Nash. Gespeeld werden met het eerste kwartet o.a. van hemzelf "Fort Worth", "Uprising" en "Song and dance", van Tom Harrell "Sail away" en de standard "I can't get started". Samen met het tweede kwartet speelde hij behalve zijn eigen "Sounds of joy" zes nummers van anderen, waaronder "Lonnie's lament" (John Coltrane), "Little Willie weeps" (Miles Davis) en "Duke Ellington's sound of love" (Charles Mingus). Bij laatstgenoemd kwartet is duidelijk dat swing en bebop de boventoon voeren, waarbij het soleren nadruk krijgt. In het pianoloze kwartet overheerst de dialoog en is er meer ruimte voor wat meer gecompliceerde improvi-saties.
