William Boyce The secular masque

De geschiedschrijving over de ontwikkeling van de opera in Engeland vertoont een ongeveer twee eeuwen durende leemte, die doorgaans wordt begrenst door Purcells 'Dido and Aeneas' en Brittens 'Peter Grimes'. Daartussen zitten dan Händels opera's, die niet als echt Engels gelden en de werken van Arthur Sullivan, die niet als echte opera's gelden. Dat er toch wel meer op operagebied gebeurde in Engeland wordt bewezen door deze opname van "The secular masque" van William Boyce (1711-1779). Boyce schreef dit stuk op een tekst van Dryden, die was vervaardigd voor de eeuwwisseling in 1700. Waarom Boyce ongeveer 45 jaar na dato juist deze tekst wilde toonzetten is onduidelijk; waarschijnlijk ligt een combinatie van bewondering voor Drydens literaire genie enerzijds en de expressieve mogelijkheden die het verhaal biedt anderzijds hieraan ten grondslag. Het werk als geheel heeft een bescheiden omvang van een klein uur, omdat het was bedoeld als 'after-opera', een soort toetje na de avondvullende serieuze opera. Boyce weet op zeer aanstekelijke wijze de tekst muzikaal te verbeelden, zoals in de aria 'Weary of my weight' en het koor 'Tis better to laugh than to cry'. De vocale solisten, het Choir of New College Oxford en de Hanover Band staan onder leiding van Graham Lea-Cox, die heel wat speurwerk moest verrichten om een bruikbare partituur samen te stellen. Ter aanvulling klinken de ouvertures uit drie verschillende "Odes", voor speciale gelegenheden geschreven cantates. (JvG)_
