Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy String symphonies

Album

Het wonderkind Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy groeide op onder wel zeer fortuinlijke omstandigheden. Zijn familie beschikte over voldoende middelen om hem een uitstekende muzikale opvoeding te geven. Zo volgde de jonge Felix al vanaf zijn tiende compositielessen bij Carl Friedrich Zelter. De composities van het jonge talent werden uitgevoerd op huisconcerten bij de familie Mendelssohn. Tijdens deze concerten werden onder meer de 13 symfonieën voor strijkers gespeeld, die Felix geschreven heeft vóór zijn 15e levensjaar. Mendelssohn leidde deze symfonieën meestal zittend achter de piano. In de uitvoering van deze symfonieën door de Hanover Band volgt dirigent Roy Goodman dit voorbeeld in een aantal symfonieën (de achtste symfonie wordt gespeeld in de versie met blazers).
