Edward Elgar The dream of Gerontius

Door het succes dat Händel in Engeland met zijn oratoria behaalde, ging dit genre aldaar een dermate vooraanstaande plaats innemen, dat geen enkele Britse componist van naam het zich kon veroorloven zich niet aan een oratorium te wagen. Ook Edward Elgar (1857-1934) ontkwam hier niet aan, en in de jaren 1899-1900 leverde hij zijn eerste bijdrage aan deze traditie. Dit was "The dream of Gerontius, op.38", dat algemeen wordt beschouwd als een van de fraaiste oratoria van Britse bodem. De tekst handelt over de angsten van de mens, wanneer deze voor zijn dood staat, en de confrontatie van de ziel met de Schepper. Van dit werk is een nieuwe uitvoering op dubbel-cd uitgebracht door Naxos. De solisten, het Bournemouth Symphony Chorus en de Bournemouth Sumphony Orchestra, onder leiding van David Hill, hebben Elgars muziek kennelijk met de paplepel ingegoten gekregen, want de uitvoering is in alles voorbeeldig.
