Tussen zijn 11e en zijn 15e levensjaar schreef Mendelssohn naast 4 opera's, 5 concerten, diverse kamermuziekwerken en diverse orgel- en pianowerken nog een vijftiental symfonieën voor strijkers. Het is interessant om te horen hoe vanuit deze weliswaar talentvolle jeugdwerken de volwassen stijl van Mendelssohn hier en daar al hoorbaar wordt, zoals bijvoorbeeld in de fugatische opzet van het eerste deel van nr. 12. De Nieuw Sinfonietta Amsterdam o.l.v. Lev Markiz speelt de nrs. 1, 6, 7 en 12.
