Sam Cooke was eind jaren '50 en begin jaren '60 één van de meest succesvolle zwarte zangers. Voor deze periode was hij actief in de eveneens succesvolle gospelformatie The Soul Stirrers. Deze boxset is een uniek discografisch overzicht en bevat behalve opnamen van Sam Cooke zèlf ook opnamen waarbij Cooke als producer en componist actief was. Alle opnamen werden gemaakt voor Sar Records, dat door Cooke samen met twee compagnons in 1959 opgericht werd. Reguliere opnamen van o.a. The Soul Stirrers, The Womack Brothers, The Valentinos en een nog heel jonge Billy Preston. Tevens een aantal studio impressies waarbij Cooke aanwijzingen geeft en enkele nog niet eerder uitgebrachte songs waaronder een demo van zijn wereldhit You Send Me.
