Thomas Arne Artaxerxes

Album

Thomas Arne (1710-1778) is van groot belang geweest voor de ontwikkeling van het theaterleven in Engeland. Bekend werd hij o.a. door de muziek die hij schreef bij enkele werken van Shakespeare. De opera "Artaxerxes" dateert uit 1762. Het manuscript is niet compleet: de recitatieven en het slotkoor ontbreken. Diverse reconstructies en aanvullingen zijn inmiddels gemaakt. In vocaal opzicht stelt het werk hoge eisen aan de zangers. De rollen van Arbaces en Artaxerxes zijn geschreven voor castraten. Deze rollen worden tegenwoordig meestal ingevuld door een mezzosopraan (Arbaces) en een countertenor (Artaxerxes). De stijl van Arne is zeer gevarieerd. Aria's in galante stijl met begeleiding van blazers worden afgewisseld met aria's in de stijl van Händel of meer volksliedachtige aria's met begeleiding van strijkers. De rol van de blaasinstrumenten krijgt veel aandacht van Thomas Arne. Hij was ook de eerste Engelse componist die de klarinet gebruikte. Arne werkt ook de karakters van zijn hoofdpersonen meer uit. Het verhaal speelt zich af in het paleis van de koning van Perzië. Uitvoerenden zijn o.a.: Christopher Robson (Artaxerxes), Ian Partridge (Artabanes), Patricia Spence (mezzosopraan) en The Parley of Instruments o.l.v. Roy Goodman. (L.W.)_
