De nieuwe live-opname van de vier symfonieën van Johannes Brahms door de Berliner Philharmonicer onder leiding van Nikolaus Harnoncourt is meer dan de zoveelste uitvoering van deze bekende muziek. Voor het creëren van zijn visie op deze orkestwerken bestudeerde Harnoncourt niet alleen de oorspronkelijke handschriften en eerste gedrukte uitgaven, maar tevens de oude orkestpartijen van de grote orkesten, zoals de Wiener Philharmoniker en de Berliner Philharmoniker. Deze uitgave bevat tevens uitvoeringen van de "Haydn-Variationen", de "Tragische Ouvertüre" en de "Akademische Festouvertüre". Tegelijkertijd met deze uitgave verscheen een live-opname onder leiding van dezelfde dirigent met Brahms' "Concert voor viool en orkest" en het "Concert voor viool, cello en orkest". Het orkest in deze uitvoering is het Concertgebouworkest en de solisten zijn violist Gidon Kremer en cellist Clemens Hagen. (H.J.)_ _
