Halifax Choral Society Songs of praise

Album

Al vanaf het midden van de 17e eeuw stimuleerde het 'Book of common prayer' het gebruik van 'Anthems', de Britse tegenhanger van het motet. Deze 'anthem' beleefde zijn bloeitijd tijdens de regering van Koningin Victoria (die een liefhebber van Mendelssohn schijnt te zijn geweest) en het begin van deze eeuw, toen het motet in de rest van Europa al lang was uitgestorven. De bij Naxos verschenen cd "Songs of praise" biedt een mooie compilatie van Engelse hymnen en anthems uit de gouden tijd van de Britse koorzang. Naast werken van Britten als Vaughan Williams, Goss, Stainer, Elgar en Parry bevat de cd ook een aantal 'continentale archetypen', zoals het "Ave verum' van Mozart en "Hear my prayer" van Mendelssohn. De werken worden uitgevoerd door de in 1817 opgerichte Halifax Choral Society onder leiding van John Pryce-Jones. (H.J.)_
