Na gestopt te zijn als lid van de tourband van The Beach Boys concentreerde Brian Wilson zich louter op het studiowerk. Het eerste wat hij deed was het boeken van de sessiemuzikanten van Phil Spector , zijn grote voorbeeld. Dit had in 1965 de hitalbums Today! en Summer Days opgeleverd. Hierna was Wilson toe aan de volgende stap. Samen met tekstschrijver Tony Asher schreef hij enkele dromerige stukken die in de studio uitgroeiden tot kleine symfonieën. De Amerikaan werkte hiervoor de gelaagde productiemethode van Spector verder uit, met een breed geluid als resultaat. In de eerlijke teksten, legde Wilson zijn getroebleerde ziel bloot. Tot de hoogtepunten behoren de jubelende opener Wouldn’t It Be Nice en het prachtige liefdesliedje God Only Knows. Pet Sounds werd direct na release in 1966 door de critici onthaald als een meesterwerk, vooral in Europa. Toch moesten sommige mensen, waaronder enkele leden van de band en de platenmaatschappij, erg wennen aan de nieuwe koers. Pet Sounds groeide niettemin uit tot een van de meest geliefde popalbums aller tijden. (JE/MS))
