Georg Friedrich Händel The rival queens

Album

De titel van de cd 'The rival queens' van Emma Kirkby, met Roy Goodman als dirigent van The Brandenburg Consort, verwijst naar twee concurrerende prima donna's voor wie Händel zijn latere opera's (waaronder "Alessandro", "Admeto", "Riccardo I", "Siroe" en "Tolomeo") schreef: Faustina Bordoni en Francesca Cuzzoni. De partijen van Bordoni worden opgenomen door Emma Kirkby, die van Cuzzoni door Catherine Bott. De strijd tussen de twee diva's bracht in het 18e-eeuwse Londen nogal wat onrust teweeg. De grote uitbarsting kwam tijdens een opvoering van Bonnoncini's "Astianatte", toen de dames elkaar op het toneel in de haren vlogen en het publiek massaal partij koos voor de een of de ander. Dit incident, waarbij de koninklijke prinsessen aanwezig waren, zorgde voor zo'n groot schandaal dat het mede de oorzaak kan zijn geweest van de groeiende impopulariteit van de Italiaanse opera in Londen. Ten gevolge van deze desinteresse voor de opera seria ging Händel's theater failliet. Uit noodzaak begon hij oratoria te componeren voor de Engelse middenklasse. Zo ontstond "The messiah"; wat een geluk voor ons! (C.P.)_
