Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy Elijah

Album

De opdracht voor Mendelssohn's tweede oratorium, "Elijah" (1846), werd gegeven door het Birmingham Festival Committee. Mendelssohn (1809-1847) was zeer geliefd in Engeland en zijn eerste oratorium "St Paul" was reeds met veel succes in Birmingham opgevoerd. Het onderwerp van de profeet Elijah sprak Mendelssohn aan: "Ich hatte mir eigentlich beim Elias einen rechten durch und durch Propheten gedacht, wie wir ihn etwa heut' zu Tage wieder brauchen könnten, stark, eifrig, auch wohl bös' und zornig und finster im Gegensatz zum Hofgesindel und Volksgesindel, und fast zu ganzen Welt in Gegensatz, und doch getragen wie von Engelsflügeln". Mendelssohn was conservatief van karakter. Terwijl tijdgenoten als Wagner en Berlioz nieuwe wegen van de muziek insloegen, liet Mendelssohn zich steeds meer inspireren door de werken van Johann Sebastian Bach en Georg Friedrich Händel. De invloed van deze componisten is duidelijk in de "Elijah" te merken. Mendelssohn betreurde, zoals vele Victorianen, het verval van het geloof en het toenemende materialisme en rationalisme. Het succes van "Elijah" was dan ook deels te danken aan de ongecompliceerde maar uiterst expressieve muziek; het was een uiting van het oude geloof, een geloof van wonderen. Het oratorium is een dramatisch werk vol toonschildering en karakterisering. Alleen het laatste gedeelte heeft meer een meditatief karakter. Een aria als "Hear ye, Israel" bijvoorbeeld droeg niet iets bij aan het dramatische verloop, maar Mendelssohn had deze fraaie aria geschreven voor een beroemde prima donna uit die tijd Jenny Lind, bijgenaamd 'de Zweedse nachtegaal'. Op de door Decca uitgegeven cd wordt ze gezongen door Renée Fleming, terwijl Bryn Terfel de rol van Elijah op zich neemt. Paul Daniel dirigeert het Edinburgh Festival Chorus en het Orchestra of The Age of Enlightenment in deze dramatische uitvoering van Mendelssohn laatste grote werk. (C.P.)_
