Georg Friedrich Händel Joseph and his brethren

Album

Het oratorium "Joseph and his brethren" (1744) is altijd in de schaduw gebleven van zijn "Messiah" of "Israel in Egypt". Critici beschouwen het werk ook nu nog wel als een 'mislukking' voornamelijk door het libretto. Dit libretto is afkomstig van James Miller, een dominee die ook satires schreef voor Londense theaters. Het verhaal is sterk dramatisch en gebaseerd op het verhaal van Jozef en zijn twaalf broers uit het Oude Testament. Vooral de figuur van Benjamin, (het onschuldige kind en jongste broertje van Jozef) is door Händel gekarakteriseerd. Het libretto is nogal gecompliceerd m.b.t. het aantal karakters en het tijdsbestek dat wordt beschreven. Om alle historische 'gaten' in te vullen bevatte het programma uit 1744 een 'advertisement' van het bijbelverhaal. Dit verhaal is ook nu opgenomen in het cd-boekje en het is bijzonder interessant om dit verhaal te leggen naast dat uit het bijbelboek Genesis 37-50. Händel gebruikte opvallend weinig muzikaal materiaal uit eerdere composities in dit oratorium. Ook dit werk heeft fraaie koren, aria's en recitatieven. "Joseph and his brethren" is voor het eerst op cd gezet door o.a.: countertenor James Bowman (Jozef), bas Michael George (Farao & Ruben), jongenssopraan Connor Burrowes (Benjamin), Choir of New College Oxford en Choir & Orchestra of The King's Consort o.l.v.
