Ralph Vaughan Williams A Cotswold romance

In 1910 schreef Ralph Vaughan Williams aan zijn librettist, de journalist Harold Child: "I have an idea for an opera written to real English words, with a certain amount of real English music" Dit idee zou tussen 1910 en 1914 uitgroeien tot de 'ballad-opera' "Hugh the Drover". De opera, waarvan het verhaal zich afspeelt in de Cotswold village te Northleach rond 1812, weerspiegelt Vaughan Williams voorliefde voor het Britse volkslied, waarvan er vele worden geciteerd. "Hugh the Drover" werd voor het eerst uitgevoerd in 1924. De componist zou het werk later een aantal keren herzien, ondermeer in 1933 en 1956. Het theatrale karakter van "Hugh the Drover" maakte het werk minder geschikt voor concertuitvoeringen. Om dit probleem op te lossen werkte Vaughan Williams' vriend Maurice Jacobson delen uit de opera om tot een cantate. Van deze cantate, "A Cotswold romance", is een uitvoering op cd verschenen door sopraan Rosa Mannion, tenor Thomas Randle, bariton Matthew Brook en het London Philharmonic Choic & Orchestra onder leiding van Richard Hickox. Deze cd bevat ook een uitvoering van de toneelmuziek voor "Death of Tintagiles", naar een toneelwerk van Maeterlinck. Een uitvoering in 1913 van dit symbolistische toneelwerk viel kennelijk niet helemaal in de smaak. Zo schreef een criticus dat dit niet iets was om de aandacht van het trendgevoelige Londense publiek vast te houden na het overvloedig avondeten. Helaas is de mooie muziek door deze affaire ten onrechte in de vergetelheid geraakt. (H.J.)_
