Johnny Cash en Willie Nelson waren juni 1997 de ideale gasten voor het programma Storytellers van het Amerikaanse tv-station VH1. Op deze door Rick Rubin geproduceerde registratie van het concert dat zij gaven spelen de twee countrylegendes, slechts begeleid door hun twee gitaren, een aaneenschakeling van klassiekers als (Ghost)Riders In The Sky, Don't Take Your Guns To Town, Funny How Time Slips Away, Crazy, Always On My Mind en Folsom Prison Blues. Tussen de nummers door vertellen zij elkaar op zeer ontspannen wijze de verhalen daarachter. VH1 Storytellers is een eerlijk, sympathiek album, dat nog eens duidelijk maakt dat Cash en Nelson, samen 131 jaar oud, zowel in als tussen de songs heel wat te zeggen hebben. (WvdZ)
