Henry Purcell Sweeter than roses

Album

Sweeter than roses is slechts één klein werk van Henry Purcell. De ondertitel van deze cd is duidelijker: Songs from the restoration theatre. Toen Charles II in 1660 naar Londen terugkeerde zorgde hij ervoor dat de theaters weer open gingen. Ook nam hij enkele gezelschappen onder zijn hoede. De muziek ging een grote rol spelen in het theater en er verschenen vrouwen op het toneel. De 'restoration songs' klonken veelvuldig op het toneel, maar er werden ook liederen geschreven voor huiselijk gebruik. Op deze cd staan 21 liederen uit die periode van o.a.: Matthew Locke, John Blow, Henry Purcell en John Eccles. Sopraan Catherine Bott wordt begeleid door diverse nstrumentalisten.
