Henry Purcell Purcell realizations

Album

In 1995 werd de 300ste sterfdag van Purcell herdacht. Toch is het nog maar betrekkelijk kort geleden dat Purcell algemeen bekend werd bij een breed publiek. Het is onder meer de verdienste Benjamin Britten en Michael Tippett geweest om het werk van Purcell onder de aandacht te brengen. Purcell gold als een belangrijk voorbeeld voor deze componisten vanwege de subtiliteit van zijn vocale stijl en vanwege zijn bijdragen aan de theatermuziek. Vanaf 1947 publiceerde Britten liederen uit de collecties "Orpheus Britannicus" en "Harmonia sacra", waarbij hij voor eigentijds gebruik de basso continuo partij uitwerkte voor piano. Bij Hyperion verscheen een cd met deze sensitieve "Purcell realizations", gezongen door Felicity Lott, James Bowman, John Mark Ainsley, Anthony Rolfe Johnson e.a.. De pianobegeleiding is in handen van Graham Johnson.
