Henry Purcell Purcell's Shakespeare

Album

In de jaren '80 van de 18e eeuw klaagde de aartsvader van de musicologen Charles Burney over de ouderwetse eigenschappen van Purcell's muziek en over diens primitieve orkestraties. Er was slechts één aspect in Purcell's muziek waarin Burney een voorbeeld zag voor latere eeuwen, namelijk Purcell's behandeling van de Engelse taal. Hiermee werd Purcell "our musical Shakespeare", waarmee hij voor de eeuwigheid een positie kreeg toegewezen die gelijkwaardig was aan die van de beroemde bard uit Stratford-upon-Avon. Helaas heeft Purcell maar weinig poëzie van Shakespeare getoonzet. Bij de vele heruitvoeringen van Shakespeare-werken waaraan Purcell heeft meegewerkt ging het meestal om bewerkingen. Zo heeft bijvoorbeeld de tekst van Purcell's lied "If music be the food of love" alleen de eerste regel gemeen met het bekende lied uit Shakespeare's "Twelfth night". De cd "Purcell's Shakespeare" van de Musicians of The Globe onder leiding van Philip Pickett bevat muziek van Purcell, afkomstig uit ondermeer "The masque of Cupid and Bacchus", "Dido and Aeneas", "The tempest" en "The Fairy Queen". Deze cd is inmiddels al weer de derde van dit uitstekende ensemble. (H.J.)_
