Ook Händel trok op jonge leeftijd naar Italië om zijn kennis en ervaring te vergroten. Hij bezocht er vier belangrijke muziekcentra die ieder een eigen specialisatie hadden. In Florence maakte hij kennis met de monodie en de 'ouderwetse' wereld van de opera. In Rome heerste de vokale polyfonie uit de Palestrinastijl. Napels was een centrum waar de hoogontwikkelde profane en geestelijke muziek zich vermengd had met de geïmproviseerde populaire muziek. Virtuoos lijnenspel in instrumentale muziek en kleurrijke meerkorige traditie trof Händel aan in Venetië. Al deze elementen nam hij mee terug naar Duitsland. Hij componeerde ongeveer 100 wereldlijke cantates voor één of meerdere stemmen met instrumentale begeleiding. De duo cantate, waarschijnlijk geschreven tijdens zijn verblijf in Napels, 'Apollo e Dafne' is hiervan een voorbeeld. Het verhaal speelt zich af in de Griekse oudheid tussen de god Apollo en Daphne. Thomas Hampson en Roberta Alexander zingen de hoofdrollen en worden begeleid door Concentus Musicus Wien o.l.v. Nikolaus Harnoncourt. (L.W.)_
