Charles Gounod Faust

Deze opname van Gounods prachtig melodieuze opera "Faust" is een produktie van de Peter Moores Foundation. De miljonair en operaliefhebber Peter Moores gelooft, dat wat het publiek vooral wil in het populaire repertoire, is 'to be able to follow the plot of an opera and understand what is going on', vandaar dat de opera in het Engels gezongen wordt. Dit is geen nieuwe gewoonte. Vroeger werden opera's regelmatig vertaald, om dezelfde reden als Moores aangeeft en er zit wat in. Weliswaar zal de taalgevoelige luisteraar gruwelen van de lelijke Engelse klinkers (waar nu eenmaal volgens de klassieke zangkunst slecht op te zingen is), maar velen zullen meer betrokken raken bij het verhaal (aangenomen dat het Engels van de gemiddelde Nederlander beter is dan zijn Frans). Op de een of andere manier krijgt de opera het karakter van een musical: misschien klinkt het minder chic maar het is wel zo leuk. De uitvoering biedt geen reden om te klagen. De leiding over het Philharmonia Orchestra is in handen van David Parry en de solisten zijn onder meer Paul Charles Clarke, Alastair Miles en Garry Magee. Overigens is de Peter Moores Foundation eveneens verantwoordelijk voor uitstekende opnames van onbekende, vroeg 19de-eeuwse Italiaanse opera's (die gewoon in het Italiaans gezongen worden). (C.P.)_
