Georg Friedrich Händel Alcina

Album

Er was grote rivaliteit tussen koning George II van Engeland en zijn zoon Frederick. Beiden hadden een eigen operagezelschap onder hun bescherming. De koning steunde Händel en de zijnen; de prins zette zich in voor Nicola Porpora, die opera's componeerde in de nieuwe galante stijl. Voor Händel vormde dit nieuwe gezelschap, met als ster niemand minder dan de wereldberoemde castraat Farinelli, een grote bedreiging. Hij werd erdoor verdreven uit zijn eigen King's Theatre en moest zijn intrek nemen in het gloednieuwe theater in Covent Garden. Geen wonder dus dat Händel zijn uiterste best deed voor de opera's die hij vervolgens zou componeren, "Ariodante" en "Alcina". Deze laatste opera heeft een zeer geliefd thema uit die tijd als onderwerp: een beeldschone tovenares weet met haar magische krachten vele mannen te gronde te richten, totdat haar eigen hart veroverd en uiteindelijk gebroken wordt. Van "Alcina" is een complete live-opname verschenen met een aantal zeer gerenommeerde namen: Renée Fleming, Susan Graham, Natalie Dessay en Les Arts Florissants onder leiding van William Christie.
