Ralph Vaughan Williams Sir John in love

Album

Toen Ralph Vaughan Williams in 1929 zijn opera Sir John In Love voltooide, was hij er zich terdege van bewust niet de eerste te zijn die zich liet inspireren door Shakespeare's tragikomische personage Sir John Falstaff. Verdi was wellicht de bekendste voorloper. Vaughan Williams' opera is echter zo anders dan Verdi's Falstaff (1893), dat de twee nauwelijks met elkaar kunnen concurreren. Falstaff biedt beter drama, maar Vaughan Williams Engelstalige opera ademt de sfeer van het Elizabethaanse theater. De Engelse componist volgde vrij nauwgezet het gecompliceerde plot van The Merry Wifes Of Windsor. Om meer liedmateriaal te hebben voegde hij teksten toe van tijdgenoten van Shakespeare zoals Thomas Campion en Christopher Marlowe. Als verzamelaar van volksliederen gebruikte hij diverse oude melodieën waaronder het geliefde Greensleeves. Sir John In Love is verschenen in een uitstekende uitvoering van The Sinfonia Chorus en het Northern Sinfonia onder leiding van de gerenommeerde dirigent Richard Hickox. Solisten zijn onder meer de sopraan Susan Gritton en de tenor Mark Padmore. (CP)_
