Band On The Run wordt over het algemeen beschouwd als Paul McCartneys sterkste soloprestatie ooit. Het album was ook zijn meest verkochte. Het leverde twee hitsingles op: de meerdelige popsuite van het titelnummer en de rocker Jet. Op de plaat heeft McCartney dezelfde voorliefde voor genuanceerde arrangementen en pakkende melodische hooks die hij ook bij the Beatles tentoonstelde. De titel Band On The Run verwijst naar de omstandigheden waaronder het album werd geproduceerd. Twee leden verlieten de band vlak vóór de opnames, waardoor McCartney, zijn vrouw Linda en gitarist Denny Laine zich genoodzaakt zagen het album alleen af te maken. Het album heeft het majestueuze, orkestrale bereik van McCartney's Abbey Road periode, variërend van de wiegende, akoestische jazzpop van Bluebird tot de slingerende, kroegmeezinger Picasso's Last Words (Drink To Me). Hoewel het de emotionele resonantie van de albums van George Harrison en John Lennon uit die tijd mist, horen we McCartney's feilloze instinct voor het popambacht op een uitstekend album.
