Virgin heeft een aantal opnamen uit de tachtiger en negentiger jaren opnieuw uitgebracht in de vorm van een relatief goedkope dubbel-cd. Tot de serie behoort een dubbel-cd met liederen van Henry Purcell (1659-1695) gezongen door Nancy Argenta. Purcell heeft in zijn korte leven vele liederen nagelaten, waarvan sommige in zijn theaterwerken terugkeerden. Ze zijn van hoge kwaliteit: fris en - naar het lijkt - volkomen spontaan, zo soepeltjes glijdt de Engelse tekst voort op de stroom van de melodie. Nancy Argenta, een sopraan met een glasheldere stem, geeft een mooie uitvoering van deze liederen, begeleid door een instrumentaal ensemble van ondermeer theorbe, gamba en klavecimbel. Een andere dubbel-cd uit de serie bevat opnamen van het ensemble Hespèrion XX met zangeres Montserrat Figueras. Het programma is gewijd aan muziek voor de Spaanse koningen uit de 15de en 16de eeuw. In deze periode strekte het Spaanse rijk zich uit tot ver buiten het Iberische schiereiland, tot in Zuid-Italië (het koninkrijk van Napels) en de Lage Landen. De eerste cd met renaissancemuziek van het Napolitaanse hof toont dan ook een mengelmoes van stijlen: Vlaams, Italiaans en Spaans. De tweede cd bevat alleen instrumentale werken van Antonio de Cabézon, een blinde componist die diende onder Karel V en Filips II. De overgeleverde werken zijn allemaal voor toetsinstrument geschreven, maar de contrapuntische lijnen van Cabézons Tientos kunnen eenvoudig aan verschillende instrumenten gekoppeld worden. Dirigent Jordi Savall maakt in deze opname gebruik van een uitgebreid ensemble van zowel snaarinstrumenten als koperblazers.(CP)_
