Georg Friedrich Händel Acis and Galatea

Album

Het is niet helemaal duidelijk tot welk genre Händels "Acis and Galatea" behoort. Opera of masque zijn goede opties. Het werk wordt ook wel eens een oratorium genoemd, maar dit is het in geen geval: het verhaal is niet van religieuze aard, zelfs niet moraliserend. Het is gebaseerd op een door Ovidius vertelde mythe verbonden aan het eiland Sicilië. De herder Acis is verliefd op de nimf Galatea. De liefde is wederzijds, maar Acis heeft een rivaal, de centaur Polyphemus, wiens klungelige pogingen om Galatea het hof te maken op niets stranden. Uit woede en jaloezie bedelft hij Acis onder een rots. De treurende Galatea verandert tot slot haar geliefde in een bron. Er bestaan officieel twee versies van "Acis and Galatea". De oorspronkelijke is vrij eenvoudig van opzet en kan in een kamer opgevoerd worden. De andere stelde Händel samen om het werk geschikt te maken voor het theater. William Christie zorgt met zijn ensemble Les Arts Florissants voor een uitstekende opname van de eerdere versie. Zoals altijd kiest Christie de zangers goed uit. Vrijwel allemaal komen ze uit de Oude Muziek-traditie, behalve de Ierse bas Alan Ewing, die nog wel eens een 19de-eeuwse opera wil zingen en hier overigens een buitengewoon fraaie en amusante Polyphemus neerzet. Verder moeten nog genoemd worden: Sophie Daneman als Galatea, Paul Agnew als Acis en Patricia Petibon als Damon. (C.P.)_
