Het bijbelboek Psalmen is een bonte verzameling expressies, variërend van uitbundige jubel tot de roep om vergelding. Het decor wisselt voortdurend, waarbij natuurschilderingen, paleisrevoluties, tempelrituelen, hofceremonieën en persoonlijke vroomheid elkaar afwisselen. Des te opvallender is het dat al deze verheven en minder verheven emoties in het Hebreeuws werden samengevat met het woord 'tehillim', oftewel 'lofprijzing'. Kennelijk werd dit al te menselijke, zonder uitzondering, beschouwd als lof aan God. Ons woord 'Psalm' heeft overigens een Griekse herkomst. Het is afgeleid van het woord 'psalmos', dat betrekking heeft op het zingen van liederen, met begeleiding van een snaarinstrument. De wijze waarop al deze poëzie is gecompileerd, verraadt een liturgische achtergrond. Het boek bestaat uit vijf delen, naar analogie van de vijfdelige thora (dat wil zeggen de bijbelboeken Genesis tot en met Deuteronomium). Elk deel wordt afgesloten met een lofprijzing en met de woorden 'Amen, ja amen' of met 'Amen, Halleluja!', waarbij psalm 150 geldt als de afsluiting van het hele boek. Ook in de Christelijke liturgie werden de psalmen intensief gebruikt. In de kloosters zong men iedere week alle 150 psalmen op bepaalde, vaste tijden. In de Anglicaanse kerk ontwikkelde men een geheel eigen wijze van psalmzingen, waarbij de tekst gereciteerd wordt op fraaie, romantische akkoordschema's. Dit soort psalmzettingen zijn te beluisteren op de door Hyperion uitgebrachte serie, met alle 150 psalmen gezongen door het St Paul's Cathedral Choir onder leiding van John Scott. De 12de cd in deze serie is tevens de laatste. Deze cd bevat de psalmen 139 tot en met 150, getoonzet door ondermeer Charles Villiers Stanford en David Willcocks. (H.J.)_
