Het Electric Light Orchestra ontwikkelde zich in de jaren zeventig en het begin van de jaren tachtig van symfonische rockband tot gelikte hitparadepopgroep, met hits als Evil Woman, Livin' Thing, Mr Blue Sky, Don't Bring Me Down en de door Olivia Newton John gezongen nummer een-hit Xanadu. In 1988 viel de band uit elkaar en begon frontman Jeff Lynne een solocarrière als artiest en producer. Hij werkte met grote namen als George Harrison, Roy Orbison, Joe Cocker, Paul McCartney en The Beatles en was een van de vijf leden van The Traveling Wilburys. Op de dubbele verzamelaar Light Years, The Very Best Of staat een uitgebreid overzicht van de imposante carrière van E.L.O., die in 1972 begon met de single 10538 Overture en in 1983 eindigde met Secret Messages.
