Charles Ives When the moon

Charles Ives (1874-1954) is een van de grootste helden uit de Amerikaanse muziek. De originele wijze waarop hij in zijn muziek het New England van zijn jeugd evoceerde, heeft vaak een excentrieke indruk gemaakt. Toch was hij met de technieken die hij hier voor gebruikte zijn tijd ver vooruit te zijn. Hij dwong respect af door zijn houding, die een combinatie was van praktische inzicht en een visionair soort idealisme. Ook hierin leek hij merkwaardig genoeg op Schönberg, hoe verschillende deze beide pioniers verder ook waren. Ives praktische inzicht bleek ondermeer uit zijn beroepskeuze. Hoewel hij een groot muzikaal talent had, wilde hij niet dat zijn familie "verhongerde vanwege zijn dissonanten". Hij koos dan ook voor een carrière in de verzekeringsbranche, terwijl hij het componeren voor de avonduren en de weekenden bewaarde. Zijn praktische instelling blijkt ook uit de talloze korte stukjes die hij schreef, die vaak in verschillende vocale en instrumentale bezettingen werden uitgewerkt. Ives verzamelde deze stukjes in zogenaamde sets. Bij Decca verscheen een uitstekende cd met een selectie uit deze sets. Sommige van deze stukjes zijn zowel in hun instrumentale als vocale versie te beluisteren. De muziek wordt uitgevoerd door Music Projects/London en de London Voices onder leiding van Richard Bernas. De liedversies voor zangstem en piano worden uitgevoerd door sopraan Susan Narucki, bariton Sanford Sylvan en pianist Alan Feinberg. (H.J.)_
