Gustav Holst First suite for military band

Album

Aan het begin van deze eeuw bestond het Britse repertoire voor militaire blaaskapel voornamelijk uit bewerkingen van bekende nummers uit opera's en musicals. Waarschijnlijk was de "First suite for military band" van Gustav Holst het eerste werk van betekenis in dit genre. De suite klinkt beknopt en eenvoudig. Toch gaf Holst de afzonderlijke partijen heel wat te doen, waardoor geen van de musici zich hoefde te vervelen met stereotiepe 'hoempa-hoempa'-figuren. Holsts meest ambitieuze stuk in dit genre is echter "Hammersmith op.52" waarin het rumoer van een dicht bevolkt gebied wordt geschilderd tegen de achtergrond van een rivier die er altijd al was en er ook zal zijn als het rumoer is verstomd. Genoemde werken worden aanstekelijk gespeeld door het Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra onder leiding van Timothy Reynish met werken van Holst (tevens de "Second suite" en een prachtige bewerking van de "Fugue a la gigue" van Bach) en Vaughan Williams (o.a.
