The Isley Brothers belichamen de geschiedenis van de soulmuziek, van de late jaren vijftig tot de vroege jaren tachtig. Beginnend als een doo-wop zanggroep wisten zij al snel goud te behalen met het opzwepende Shout (1960) en hun swingende arrangement van Twist And Shout. Ze veranderden mee met de tijd maar wisten met hun gouden zangstemmen altijd een zekere authenticiteit te behouden. De muzikale groei begon met het toevoegen van de jongste broer Ernie Isley, wiens gitaarspel zwaar was beïnvloed door Jimi Hendrix. De legendarische gitarist speelde begin jaren zestig kort bij de broers en is op twee tracks van deze box te horen. Vervolgens begonnen The Isley Brothers te kiezen voor opvallende covers (zoals een bewerking van Hello It’s Me van Todd Rundgren) en wellicht inspireerde dit hen tot een even bijzonder oeuvre van eigen composities, zoals That Lady en It’s Your Thing. Deze periodes zijn quasi-chronologisch verdeeld over drie cd’s. Met veel obscure tracks, naast het beste werk en de hitsuccessen, is dit de definitieve box van de groep en een essentieel stukje soulgeschiedenis: van doo-wop tot disco.
