Na het ingetogen, elektronische Adore uit 1998 is The Smashing Pumpkins terug met een album waarop weer meer plaats is ingeruimd voor de heavier kant van de band. Omdat er op Machina/The Machines Of God nog steeds gebruik wordt gemaakt van de nodige elektronica is de cd te plaatsen tussen het meesterwerk Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness (1995) en Adore. De band, met Jimmy Chamberlin terug achter het drumstel, klinkt op de meeste momenten spijkerhard (The Everlasting Gaze, Heavy Metal Machine) en neemt slechts een enkele keer gas terug met de luchtiger en poppier songs Try, Try, Try en With Every Light.
